Savoring for your Health

I love to reminisce. When I get together with friends or family we tell the same stories again and again. Like the time we stared death in the face in Interlaken, Switzerland. We had decided to ride little mopeds (remember those?) on the narrow roads in the surrounding mountains. Huge trucks came within inches of […]

Who Do You Run To?©

It was 1976. I was in the fifth grade. The fifty-yard dash record for Lake Bluff Elementary School in Shorewood, Wisconsin was set in the mid 1950s. I had a chance to break it. I walked past my classmates and stepped up to the starting line. I looked at my gym teacher, Mr. (Buddy) Wolf. He blew his whistle and I took off running. I pumped my legs and arms as fast as I could. 6.5 seconds later I leaned into the finish line and I heard the click of Mr. Wolf’s stop watch. I turned around just as fast as I could to hear Mr. Wolf say: “You just broke the school record!”

Don’t Let the Peanuts Run Your Life.©

I love peanuts. I like them salted or unsalted. I like them sweet or savory. You can put them in my dinner or in my dessert. I never met a peanut I didn’t like. It is a joy to eat peanuts!
It’s also a challenge to eat peanuts. Peanuts pack a caloric punch. Too many peanuts […]

Gratitude – The Secret to Getting Back Up©

By David J. Pollay David J. Pollay's website David J. Pollay's email

Floyd Patterson, a heavyweight boxing legend and Hall-of-Famer, once said, “They said I was the fighter who got knocked down the most, but I also got up the most.” Patterson found a way to get back up each time. This is the mark of a good leader, and a successful person. You get up after you get smacked.

All success stories involve knock down after knock down. The question is, why do some people have the courage and confidence to get up while many others stay down. Let me tell you how I learned the secret.

It’s Not a Catastrophe! Don’t Build a “Jack Story.”©

There’s one line that keeps me from dwelling on the negative when difficult things happen in my life.  It’s the moral of a story my dad told me when I was growing up.

Here’s Dad’s story as he told it.

“A guy is driving through the desert when one of his tires blows out.  He gets out […]

Let Positive Triggers Turn on Your Best Self ©                                         by David J. Pollay
A few years ago I was sitting in my office, by myself, and I wasn’t feeling good.  Yes, it’s true.  I research, write and speak about Positive Psychology, but I admit it, I wasn’t having a good day.
So, here’s my first question:  Where do […]

Share Your Dreams. Let People Help You.

Have you ever said something like this to yourself? “I have a dream. I want to do what I love every day. Yet, I don’t know how to get there. I am too busy. I have too many responsibilities right now. When things slow down, I’ll figure out what […]

Let Your Subconscious Mind Go To Work for You - Part II©

By David J. Pollay David J. Pollay's website David J. Pollay's email

My Dad’s father understood the power of the subconscious. When I couldn’t figure something out when I was growing up, my grandfather used to say, “Take a walk. Clear your mind.” He believed that if you set aside your issue for a little while, you would allow your subconscious mind to bring forth new and better thoughts, not just the few you already had. As a result you would come up with a better idea.

My Dad’s father understood the power of the subconscious.
