Lucy, I love the notion of "standing in love".
I have reviewed two plays this week, both, curiously, about mid-life crises. It seems that this baby-boomer generation of have-it-alls actually have very little in the way of satisfaction, happiness and peace of mind. We all need reminding more frequently that relationships rely more on memory - the remembering of shared times, of pain and pleasure - than on instant gratification.
Thank you for reminding me to stand up and love, and be loved (hopefully)!

Yet as I watched the bewilderment on the faces of the tribesmen who came face to face with the true misery of six million, grey- suited, commuters on a grey London morning, I wondered what it will take for us to take on board Leonardo da Vinci’s comment that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”?

Fabulous Lucy. Great piece, well written. Absolutely on the button. And love the inclusion of art, of course.

Best aye

Thanks for such an interesting and thought provoking article, Lucy. Especially poignant to return home tonight and read this, being one of the six million, grey-suited commuters of London that the Melanesians encountered!

Warr and Payne's findings remind me of Wittgenstein's comment that
'The aspects of things that are most important to us are hidden because of their simplicity and familiarity.'

Thanks!

This is Lucy's FIRST ARTICLE for PPND! Welcome, Lucy! Wonderful to be reading your work!

--------------
Lucy,

Thanks for the in-depth article.

You talk about Putnam's work about individualism. It might also be that when we minimize individualism to the extreme (i.e. maximize focus on others and on work with little regard for self) that well-being may also suffer, as discussed by Dave Shearon here.

Perhaps research is starting to show that a balance of individual vs. other time is necessary.

Best,
Senia
